ITS Surabaya Submits iStow to the KNKT
Surabaya (Beritajatim.com) – Stowage planning software made by ITS (Nopember Institute of Technology) Surabaya named iStow was handed over to the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). This means that iStow has the opportunity to be applied more broadly in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the Head Researcher of ITS iStow, Dr. Ing Ir Setyo Nugroho revealed, currently iStow has pocketed various international certificates with high credibility. Therefore, he believes that the iStow implementation has been recognized as safe globally.
“iStow uses ship stability and strength calculations in accordance with the safety criteria of the International Maritime Organization (IMO),” said Nugroho, Friday (24/2/2023).
He explained, that the current condition of ships in Indonesia is that there are still many ships that have not used standard cargo calculation standards. Namely, starting from being prone to human error to calculating accuracy that does not meet standards. “This also triggers many maritime accidents that still occur,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the KNKT, Dr. Ir Soerjanto Tjahjono, said that currently the stowage plan is still being made manually with a high error rate. He considered that iStow’s role would be a prospective new opportunity as well as a challenge for the maritime sector in Indonesia. “iStow has been assisted with digital transformation, so the loading planning process is very fast,” he said.
Later, he continued, in the maritime sector in Indonesia, iStow could be applied to all ships in Indonesia that would sail. “The main problem with the current sinking case is the issue of stability, this is where the role of iStow is needed,” said Soerjanto. [ipl/kun]
