ITS Hands Over iStow to KNKT, Head of KNKT: iStow’s Role is Much Needed!

ITS (Nopember Institute of Technology) submitted the iStow innovation results to the Chair of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) at the ITS Rectorate Building, Friday, February 24, 2023.

Head of KNKT, Dr. Ir. Soerjanto Tjahjono warmly welcomed the mandate given by ITS.

According to Soerjanto, iStow, which is software for planning ship loading, can later be applied to all ships in Indonesia that will sail.

“The main problem with the current sinking case is the issue of stability, this is where the role of iStow is needed,” he explained, quoted from the dikti.kemdikbud.go.id page.

The Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP), represented by the Head of the Cooperation and Scholarship Development Division, Agam Bayu Suryanto SE MBA, emphasized the intention of further support for iStow and KNKT.

“LPDP is proud to have contributed to the successful development of iStow so far, we will be open to research opportunities and potential for further developments,” he said.

Then the Head Researcher of ITS iStow, Dr. Ing Ir Setyo Nugroho explained that currently iStow has pocketed various international certificates with high credibility.

These various certificates are his confidence if the implementation of iStow has been recognized as safe to use globally.

“iStow uses ship stability and strength calculations in accordance with the safety criteria of the International Maritime Organization (IMO),” said the Head of the ITS Marine Transportation Engineering Department.

He further said that there are still many ships in Indonesia that have not used standard cargo calculation standards.

For example, the accuracy of calculations that do not meet the standards, which also triggers maritime accidents that have occurred so far.

Continuing this statement, the Head of the KNKT acknowledged that currently the stowage plan is still being made manually with a high error rate.

Thus, iStow’s role will be a new opportunity as well as a prospective challenge for the maritime sector in Indonesia.

For information, iStow made by the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) is the only stowage planning software made by the nation’s children. This software has the opportunity to be applied more widely in Indonesia.
