On February 24, 2023, at the ITS Rectorate Building, the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) submitted the iStow innovation results to the Chair of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). Dr. Ir. Soerjanto Tjahjono, the Head of KNKT, warmly welcomed this initiative. He stated that iStow, a software designed for ship loading planning, could be applied to all ships in Indonesia.

The main problem with the current sinking case is the issue of stability. This is where iStow plays a crucial role,” Soerjanto explained, as reported on the dikti.kemdikbud.go.id page.

iStow’s Role in Improving Maritime Safety

Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education Agency (LPDP), represented by the Head of the Cooperation and Scholarship Development Division, Dr. Agam Bayu Suryanto, S.E., M.B.A, emphasized the intention of further support for iStow and KNKT.

Dr. Agam Bayu Suryanto, S.E., M.B.A, representing the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), emphasized their continued support for iStow and KNKT. “LPDP is proud to have contributed to the development of iStow. We are open to further research opportunities and potential developments,” he stated.

Then the Head Researcher of ITS iStow, Dr.-Ing. Ir. Setyo Nugroho explained that currently iStow has pocketed various international certificates with high credibility. These various certificates are his confidence if the implementation of iStow has been recognized as safe to use globally.

iStow uses ship stability and strength calculations in accordance with the safety criteria of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)” said the Head of the ITS Marine Transportation Engineering Department.

He also mentioned that many Indonesian ships still do not use standard cargo calculation methods. Inaccurate calculations often lead to maritime accidents.

The Future of iStow in Indonesia

Soerjanto acknowledged that current stowage plans are still made manually, leading to high error rates. Therefore, iStow offers a new opportunity and challenge for the Indonesian maritime sector. Developed by Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), iStow is the only stowage planning software created by Indonesian experts and has the potential for broader application in the country.
